Rewarded for Learning

In working with children and from previous education, I do not believe in the "gold star chart" system or points system.  I have found that it is not meaningful to the students and does not reinforce the reason for learning.  Charts also enable students to compete and compare because they are usually displayed.  Students who are not gaining the stickers not only lose self esteem but they may not be able to physically, emotionally or mentally, follow the directions due to ADHD, for example.  I do understand that some students need extra encouragement or motivation to stay on task or complete their assignments but usually for those students, a gold star is not it.  Students seem to lose the intrinsic motivation, like the text says, and focus solely on what they will get if they complete the task or do the behavior.  Students do not learn to internalize the behavior if they are only thinking of the reward.  Teachers should instead try to make every lesson interesting and exciting to gain the attention of the students as well as always tell the students the reason for the lesson.  If an educator can not explain the point of the activity or desired behavior, it should not be done.  I think it helps students to know why they are having to learn certain material and the reason is not to gain a sticker.

The educator should also be giving positive feedback and encouragement but not praise.  Praise also does not allow the children  to internalize the behavoir because they are then doing the behavior for the person praising and not for themselves.

Children who are constantly praised are always looking for someone elses approval and disregard what they may think about their own behavior or accomplishment.  Instead, educators should be giving encouragement through discussion with the child.  For example, a child is coloring a picture.  I might say, "Tell me about your picture.

What do you like about?"  Instead of saying, "I like your picture."  Asking the child to talk about their picture encourages them to take pride in their work for themselves whereas the latter focuses on what the educator likes which leads the child to depend on approval of others.

Overall, I believe reward systems do not work unless they are individually based with a meaningful motivator and when other means have failed.

Also, students should be encouraged but not praised for their efforts.

I think people who do what they love to do (job), do it for themselves without necessarily needing extrinsic motivation but people who depend on those extrinsic motivators may find themselves doing the job for the motivators as oppose to for themselves.
