Meditation may improve coronary artery disease

Relaxing with transcendental meditation may help to lower blood pressure and reduce insulin resistance in patients with coronary artery disease, according to researchers.

Coronary artery disease is a “hardening” of the coronary arteries, which restricts the normal flow of blood and can increase blood pressure. CAD also increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Insulin resistance occurs when the cells have difficulty using the hormone insulin, which is necessary to process glucose . Type II diabetes occurs when the body is unable to process glucose, which builds in the bloodstream.

Researchers from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles evaluated 103 patients with CAD as part of a 16-week trial. Fifty-two of the participants received instruction in transcendental meditation, while the remaining 51 patients received health education. The average age of both groups was about 67 years old.

Transcendental meditation is a traditional technique used to achieve physical relaxation and calm through mental concentration. Previous studies of transcendental meditation have shown it is effective at lowering blood pressure. However, studies had not evaluated its effectiveness at treating other CAD symptoms until this most recent study.

By the end of the 16 weeks, the patients in the transcendental meditation group had significantly lowered their blood pressure, improved their level of insulin resistance, and showed more stable functioning of their autonomic nervous system. All of these positive changes were achieved without changes in body weight, medication or substantial increase in physical activity.

The researchers theorize that the transcendental meditation helps to relieve chronic stress, which causes the release of cortisol and other hormones and neurotransmitters. Over time, these substances damage the cardiovascular system.

“Our results, demonstrating beneficial physiological effects of Transcendental Meditation in the absence of effects on psychosocial variables, suggest that Transcendental Meditation may modulate response to stress rather than alter the stress itself, similar to the physiological impact of exercise conditioning,” the authors write in a recent press release.

The results of the study were published in the June 12 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.
