Turning Point honors Girls Inc.
Turning Point presented its annual report to the community Thursday in the Sanctuary of Shelbyville gymnasium. About 40 community members attended, including Turning Point board members and representatives from affiliates such as the Shelby County United Fund Inc. and the Shelby County Drug Free Coalition.

Shelby County Community Services director Jessica Gates and director of outreach Rhea Murray awarded Shelbyville's Girls Inc., represented by executive director Barbara Anderson and program director Carmen Wertz, the "Mission Partner Award."

Girls Inc. offers a course to girls 12 years and older that aids the development of self-esteem - totaling about 40 girls per session. Even first-grade girls participate in self-esteem and anti-bullying activities.

"Our belief is that if we raise the girls' self-esteem then they are less likely to be victims of domestic violence," Anderson said.


"Each year we recognize someone in the community for assisting Turning Point in achieving its mission," said Murray, thanking Girls Inc. administrators "for their dedication to empowering girls, and domestic violence is a real threat to that empowerment."

Gates also announced the "Survivor of the Year Award," who remained anonymous. The recipient will receive the award during a private ceremony at a later date.

Turning Point executive director Patrick Smith and Sanctuary of Shelbyville founder and director Dave Farr also spoke at the event.

Farr explained the relationship between Turning Point and Sanctuary of Shelbyville during his address. Both organizations are part of a Shelby County "task force for domestic violence support," he explained. That task force also includes Major Hospital, the prosecutor's office (victim advocates), and the police and sheriff's departments. Representatives from each organization meet four times per year to discuss plans to diminish domestic violence.

Sanctuary of Shelbyville hopes to provide after-care services.

"Shelby County lacked transitional housing," said Farr, speaking of long-term care that can last from six months to two years.

The availability of transitional housing "would reduce the number of victims returning to the crisis shelter and the number returning to their assailants," he said.

Farr said he believes the facility may open by the second quarter of 2008.

Smith explained this year's theme "We Are All About Safety" has a dual purpose. For one, it communicates that the organization's "primary focus and starting point" is the safety of its clients.

Second, the theme unites the community task force. Organizations that participate in the task force "all play a different role in the community, and "All About Safety' is the common ground," he said.

Turning Point estimates that it will reach 45 to 50 percent of the 800 families in Shelby County in need of domestic violence services this year, or about 200. Smith said, "It's not acceptable that we're not reaching more of them."

Smith also described a pilot middle school program in Jackson County that teaches students about healthy relationships and dating violence. He hopes to bring it to Shelby County next year.

Turning Point is headquartered in Columbus and serves 12 Indiana counties. This year ending in September, 149 families in Shelby County received services, in contrast to 146 in all of 2006, and 48 calls came through its 24-hour crisis line - (800) 221-6311.
