The Psychology of Creativity

I had the pleasure of listening to one of the most interesting CS talks to date when Host hosted CS in Sydney. Dr. Chris Stevens of Creative Mastery International, took us through the Psychology of Creativity (I believe Chris is one of the few people in the world to have done a PhD in creativity). Anyway he covered some really interesting points e.g. he confirmed one of our previous discussions at CS where we stated the need to find people who have a real passion for something as well as a natural curiosity. However the one that really struck me was the idea of egolessness and its influence on creativity. I have been trying to grapple for a while what makes us digital agencies different to ‘traditional’ agencies and why we have been able to make something like CS so successful. It was interesting that it mirrored a comment made by a big ‘traditional’ creative director 3 days into a 2 week ‘internship’ at our agency when he said that he could not believe how egoless the agency was. I believe that this is true across all Socials and it certainly bodes well given it is one of the 6 things that lead to creativity.

Otherwise I can highly recommend that you contact him (drchris at communicorp.com.au) and get him in to speak to your teams. One final thought from Chris which I thought was interesting:

Committing to a life of creativity you are committing to a life of frustration
