Chocolate could provide motivation for any situation
Motivation. Authors write books about it. Infomercials try to sell programs to impart it. Inspirational speakers try to stoke the fire of it within us. But they're wasting their time. The impetus to motivate is simple.

Chocolate.

Especially when it comes to women.

It is estimated that more than 95 percent of women love chocolate -- so much so that the average American woman eats 32 pounds of it annually.

Why? First and foremost, the stuff tastes good.
Second, the chemical phenylethylamine, which is present in chocolate, is the same chemical that is released in your brain when you fall in love.

It's what makes your heart pound, makes you feel that sudden rush of excitement, and boosts sales volume at Victoria's Secret. They call it the "love chemical."

Who wouldn't crave that?

Chocolate also contains caffeine, which can lift your energy levels, at least temporarily.

And Italian research scientist Daniele Piomelli found that chocolate contains substances that mimic the effects of marijuana. I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing, but where's the Jimi Hendrix 8-track?


According to the European Society for Sexual Medicine in London, women who have a daily intake of chocolate showed higher levels of desire than women who do not.

That said, I wonder if chocolate might be just the thing for keeping women motivated.

Think about it.

Chocolate could do wonders for increasing the compliance level of housework.

Imagine a machine that automatically dispenses a handful of M&Ms whenever it senses the presence of Pledge or Windex molecules in the room. It would be like Pavlov's Dogs for Domestic Order.


Chocolate could fire up a romantic relationship, not only from the phenylethylamines it contains but from the um, er, brownie points the guy makes just by giving it to you.

Forget daily phone calls, attentiveness, compliments, walks on the beach and hand holding. Nothing says "I love you" like a carton of Goo Goo Clusters.

Heck, we don't even care if they're still in the store bag. And let me just say that if chocolate-covered raspberries had been around in the 1990s, my daughter might not be an only child.

Forget psychotherapy. Bring on the Reese-therapy.

And finally, with the presidential election coming up in 2008, it's time for politicians to start thinking of inducements that actually encourage us to vote for them.
