Ya gotta have heart

The tightness in Joe Piscatella's chest turned out to be more than just a little twinge.
In 1977, Piscatella started noticing slight chest pains during his daily tennis workouts. At the age of 32, he walked into his doctor's office thinking maybe he had bronchitis. It didn't take long for his physician to discover a severe blockage - 95 percent - in his left main artery, a blood vessel the doctor referred to as ``the widow maker.''
Even after bypass surgery, doctors gave him news that was common back in the 1970s, before we became a cholesterol-conscious nation. The doctors told him: Use the time you have. Make your peace. Get your affairs in order. Say your goodbyes. You won't live to see your children graduate.
Thirty years later, Piscatella is the picture of health.
He celebrated his 63rd birthday this summer with a cruising vacation to the San Juan islands with friends and his wife of 40 years, Bernie.
Piscatella changed his fate by studying his condition, adopting healthy lifestyle changes and maintaining a positive attitude. He started the Institute for Fitness & Health and has written several books, produced videos and presented many motivational programs about diet, exercise and reducing stress.
He's appeared on ``Today'' and ``Good Morning America'' and was featured in Time magazine. When he's not traveling, he can be found on early morning jogs near his Gig Harbor, Wash., home or working out at the YMCA.
More importantly, he recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of his bypass surgery.
And despite his grim prognosis 30 years ago, he has seen both of his children graduate from high school and college. He's seen them get married and he has held his grandchildren.
Here's a look at what Piscatella had to say about the new life he found.

Q: Go back to 1977. What happened after your doctor gave you the bad news?
A: I remember I went home and moped around a lot. Finally, my wife yanked my chain and said, ``You can't change the cards you're dealt, but you can change the way you play them. Despite what the doctor says, let's do everything we can do.''

Q: What happened next?
A: I was fortunate that there was not a heart attack involved. I still had (muscle tissue) to work with, and I got interested in what you do to preserve this muscle and not run into more problems. I studied and ended up writing ``Don't Eat Your Heart Out.'' In 1977, no one knew much about cholesterol.

Q: What did you learn?
A: (Health is) not so much genetics as it is lifestyle. We all have a chance to make improvements. So much is not genetic. I've seen a lot of people with bad genes offset them with good lifestyles, and I've seen a lot of people with good genes offset them with bad lifestyles.
Another thing is that corporations are very interested in having their people lead healthier lifestyles. When I first got started, we didn't know much about cholesterol. We didn't know as much about diet and exercise. I've given motivational seminars for (many large and small corporations) to educate and motivate people to make healthy lifestyle changes.

Q: So it's part education, part motivation?
A: As far as motivation, part of that is my living story. I give them information about healthy living and tell them how to put the information to work in a realistic way. You'll find I'm never going to tell somebody to eat cardboard sandwiches. I'm pretty middle-of-the-road on diet and exercise. But often what they need is inspiration and motivation to take those first few steps.
In the corporate world, I put a lot of emphasis on stress and health. I wrote ``Take a Load Off Your Heart'' and did a PBS special by the same name to show people that you can know so much about healthy eating that the food pyramid is tattooed on your forehead. But if you're out of time, M&Ms are lunch.

Q: How should we get started on making lifestyle changes?
A: You know, someone once said this is a nation that discusses its cholesterol problems over Danish pastries. ... If you're eating from boxes and cans and fast-food outlets three times a day and the most you know about movement is watching people dance on television, that catches up with you. Children get it at an earlier age because they pick up adult habits.
I think the first step is making a decision that you're going to do it and then taking baby steps after that. You don't have to run marathons to be healthy. It's just moving that counts. Start with a 30-minute walk and then build. And make a commitment. Get a partner.
Same thing on the eating side: You don't have to go to the extreme and have a no-fat diet. You can make some simple changes that will help you cut fat and calories. Instead of worrying about 1,000 new recipes with ingredients you can't spell, focus on 12 you like and learn to trim down the fat without removing taste. There's nothing sexy about it. Having a healthy lifestyle is really a moderate approach.
