Meeting focuses on how to recruit and retain the right staff

THE problems of recruiting the right staff and then holding on to them exercised the minds of business people at a Chamber of Commerce event in Peterborough.
About 30 people from a variety of companies across the Peterborough attended the two hour seminar which was held at Thorpe Hall.

Guest speaker at the seminar, entitled Rewards, Retention and Motivation, was Mick Leggett, chief executive of Cross keys Homes, which took over the responsibility for 10,000 council homes three years ago.

Mr Leggett outlined the challenges he faced in motivating staff after the firm took over the city council's housing stock.

He said task had been to give the organisation a customer focus and make staff proud of what they did and who they worked for.
"There had been a tendency to say 'no' to customers' demands, and no one ever seemed proud to say they worked for the housing services.

Cross Keys Homes brought in a new focus on customer service and a determination to engage and listen to its customers – its tenants.

Mr Leggett said: "People want a job that has significance – it is not all about salary.

"There is nothing particularly exciting about our rewards system. People move slowly up the incremental ladder. Our average salary is about £20,000 per year.

"But what Cross Keys Homes has done is to put significance and pride back into the jobs of our 250 staff."

But Mr Leggett said the problem about saying 'yes' to customers was that it meant things had to be done.

"It doesn't suit everyone, and in our first year staff turnover was 20 per cent."

He said that companies had to be aware of the changing nature over the years of would-be employees.

He said about 50 years ago getting a job was cause for celebration, and employees tended to remain loyal to one firm.

"But for the next generation the job was everything, they put work before everything else, and were willing to move from employer to employer.

"Now lifestyle is becoming more important, with staff demanding more flexibility to meet family or home demands or to do charitable work.

"Today's youngsters demand instant gratification are not going to be willing to work their way slowly up the company. Firms
need to rethink how they are going to recruit staff.

He said one idea companies could follow was to set up an alumni scheme where the firm stayed in touch with former members of staff who left to get new qualifications or experience at other companies.

Ee-mail or brochures had been used to keep former employees in touch with developments at the company to encourage them to return later on.

Cross Keys Homes has also drawn up what it describes as its driving forces

Mr Leggett said: "About 93 per cent of the staff know about these driving forces, and even if they can't repeat them will understand that they about making a difference to people's lives."

Director of Motivation Matters Stephen Walker said the key to motivating a workforce was to give them a vision.

"People are mostly inspired through their ears and eyes. To change people's minds you must given them a vision.

“Motivation is about getting people to believe in the way of doing things that is best for your organisation.

He said a classic example of successful motivation was the floor sweeper working for the space agency NASA in the early ‘60s who when asked what he was doing said he was helping to put a man on the moon.

The seminar was rounded off with a update on new employment legislation by John Macaulay, a director of Greenwoods Solicitors in Peterborough.
