Do magnets have healing power?

Q: I have had chronic back pain for five years; I have tried physical therapy, acupuncture and chiropractic adjustments, and nothing gives me any lasting relief. A friend of mine is selling magnets for pain; she says that if I wear these on my back, my pain will go away. Do they really work?

A: Magnets have been used medicinally for many years; in the recent past, pulsed electromagnetic radiation has been used experimentally to help bones heal from fractures. MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, machines also use magnets to produce detailed pictures of the human body.

The smaller magnets that you are referring to, however, have much less science to back them up. These magnets became popular in the 1970s when Japanese businessman Isamu Masuda founded a company called Nikken and started marketing them worldwide as an alternative therapy for people with chronic fatigue and musculoskeletal pain.

Products imbedded with small magnets, from shoe inserts to mattress pads, were sold in a pyramid marketing plan. Today, the company sells many more products, including dietary supplements and air purifiers, and earns billions of dollars per year. We have had a number of patients who have tried these magnets. Some have had success, some have not.

Is there science behind these products?

Electromagnetic radiation is intriguing in the healing arts, and there are numerous theories about why magnets might work, including the possibility that they increase blood flow to the area of the body being treated. They also may affect nerve impulses in the tissues, produce muscle relaxation or even increase the body's own painkillers.

A recent study published in the Canadian Medical Journal, however, casts doubt on the effectiveness of the Nikken-type magnets for treating pain. The authors summarized all the good-quality studies that have been done on using magnets to treat pain. (Only studies with a placebo group were included.) Their conclusion? Magnets did no better in relieving pain than placebos.

Another recent summary study published in the journal Pain looked at the value of electrical nerve stimulation for people with chronic musculoskeletal pain (sometimes referred to as TENS, or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation). The study concluded that TENS units were effective for pain.

Many other alternative therapies have been used for pain. Some of the more effective include acupuncture, body work (such as deep tissue massage) and yoga. Mind-body therapies including laughter, guided imagery, mindfulness meditation and emotional release also can be effective.

One pioneer researcher in this field is Dr. John Sarno at New York University. Sarno has worked with people with chronic pain for more than 30 years, and helps them to get better by addressing unresolved painful and angry emotions. He has written numerous books; a good one to start with is "Healing Back Pain" (Grand Central Publishing, 1991; $13.99, 208 pages) or "The Mindbody Prescription" (Grand Central Publishing, 1999; $14, 240 pages). You also can purchase his video/DVD lecture series for patients by going to his Web site, www.healingbackpain.com.

In conclusion, we recommend that you look into mind-body therapies for your back pain and consider some of the other alternative therapies mentioned above if you haven't yet tried them. We also recommend that you skip the magnets; instead, get a great massage and watch your favorite funny movie.
