Alternate parenting being taught

Glynis Romanica believes an alternative form of discipline can play an important role in strengthening relationships and creating better citizens.

Romanica is a school counsellor in Powell River, who teaches peaceful parenting, a course in restitution parenting. The philosophy is a departure from many traditional approaches to parenting and discipline. It builds on people's innate sense of discipline and responsibility rather than attempting to control others through reward and punishment.

It may seem like a pipe dream, but restitution is catching on because it is getting results, according to Romanica. Schools using restitution notice a decrease in incidents requiring discipline and improvement in academic standings. There are several school districts implementing it in BC and across North America. Iceland has embraced it in a big way. They have schools and communities using restitution to deal with various social issues, Romanica said.
Children feel pain from their mistakes, Romanica added. Fixing a problem gives children a way to feel better about themselves and learn something from the experience.

"The carrot keeps getting bigger when you keep rewarding kids for good behaviour and punishing them for bad behaviour," she said. "We find that when we punish kids, the behaviours tend to increase."

Rewarding good behaviour erodes intrinsic motivation, Romanica said. "When the rewards are no longer big enough, you have to up the ante."

The course is based on the book My Child is a Pleasure, by Diane Gossen, also the author of Restitution Restructuring School Discipline.

The books have roots in a number of philosophies and research. One is choice theory, an unorthodox theory developed by American psychiatrist William Glasser. According to his theory, "the only person whose behavior we can control is our own." Practitioners aim to build skills and give children tools to find solutions that foster relationships, and bring them closer, rather than attempting to control them.

Gossen's approach also incorporated information learned from brain studies and used ideas from traditional first nations beliefs. Gossen interviewed a Cree elder to find out how they disciplined their children. Parents encourage their children to recognize their innate sense of right and wrong and follow those instincts to do the right thing.

The philosophy also believes there are three reasons people behave: to avoid punishment, for respect or reward from others, and a sense of internal discipline. Restitution aims to develop the latter.

Romanica is realistic. Restitution parenting is not just a politically correct, wishy-washy approach that lets kids off the hook by expressing themselves. There is a firm bottom line, which will be enforced if necessary.

Restitution parenting has a lot of work in the beginning, Romanica said. Once it is established, the child is instilled with greater awareness of themselves and the feelings for those who are close to them. She believes children as young as five can begin to show results from it.

"We believe that all behaviour is purposeful and we learn that all behaviour is an attempt to meet our needs," she said. "When a child does something, if the parent can identify what the need is behind the behaviour, we can help the child to get what they need, not necessarily what they want."

Last year, Romanica taught the course to 12 parents, but she hopes more will participate when she begins another course in January.

The eight-week course will be offered at Henderson Elementary School and is open to all parents of students in the school district. The class runs one night a week and each session is about an hour and a half. The school district will pay for babysitting for parents who may otherwise not be able to attend.
