The true value is in something earned

Over and over again, one word kept popping up.

Each and every Tivy football player queried after the Antlers’ thrilling 30-27 overtime win at Boerne used it.

Used it properly.

And, in the end, appropriately.

Each player spoke of the “trust” he has in his teammates. The belief that the person standing next to him would, to the best of his ability, do his best to do his job.

And when things got tight — when Boerne came roaring back in the fourth quarter to tie a critical game in the District 27-4A race — it was that trust that kept the Antlers from panicking.

“I have total trust in my teammates,” senior Harrison Holley said moments after making a sprawling grab for the game-winning touchdown. “I knew that each of them would do what they had to do to help us win that game. Total confidence. That’s what it is.”
And for a reason.

Trust is earned, not given.

That’s a rare commodity in this entitlement weary world. Too many times, people feel they are owed something long before they earn it.

And, too often, they get things long before they earn it.

It’s a sad cycle of appeasement — capitulation in merit’s stead — that is spawning a generation void of self-reliance and self-motivation.

Work for something? Why bother? Wait long enough — whine loud enough — and you get what you want in the end, even if the process saps the bauble of any semblance of true worth.

Instead of an achievement — a result borne of effort and sacrifice and instilled with self-actualized value — you get a bright, shiny, useless ribbon.

Just like everyone else.

What has made this football season an overwhelming success at Tivy has as little to do with wins and losses as getting an “A” in a glorified study hall has to do with true scholarship.

Certainly, it is easier to quantify the value with each win. Pointing out the positives for a team that is 9-0 — and, this week, ranked No. 9 in the 4A state football poll — is kind of like pointing out that Catherine Zeta-Jones is fairly attractive.

Duuuuuh.

But, the fact is, what the Antlers will take away from this season — no matter how many more wins there are down the road — is far more valuable than cosmetic achievement.

A year removed from a frustrating season dotted with both near-misses and flat-out flops, this team — players and coaches alike — refocused and rededicated, went back to the basics and found in the simple tenet of hard-work and humble sacrifice an intrinsic truth.

Everyone wants something.

Few people are willing to do what it takes to earn it.

And choosing to be the latter, as a group, the Antlers gained more than muscle and agility and strength and quickness.

They gained resolve.

They gained perspective.

And they gained each other’s trust.

More accurately, in hours and hours spent sprinting until their lungs burned, lifting weights until their veins popped and pushing separately and together, they EARNED each other’s trust.

And that, in the end, is more valuable than any championship or trophy.

It’s a lesson any team — no matter the record — would do well to study.

A district championship is on the line Friday, when Tivy hosts defending 4A-Division I state champion Alamo Heights, and the game will be hard-fought.

But, no matter the outcome and no matter what happens in the playoffs, the Antlers will walk off winners.

The things they have achieved this season — and the life-long impact it will have on each and every young man — ensures that.

Not because someone gave them anything.

Because they’ve earned it.
